StartupMill creates new companies based on knowledge
Industry in South Carelia has gone through an extensive structural change during recent years. New companies based on knowledge have become more important employers and growth generators. At present too few new companies are being started: only a couple of companies annually. In the beginning of the 2000s, many more companies were starting up. One of the most important parts of the industrial strategy of the city of Lappeenranta is developing companies based on knowledge.
Wirma Lappeenranta Oy, Imatran Seudun Kehitysyhtiö Oy and Lappeenranta University of Technology have launched StartupMill services in spring 2014. They aim to increase the number of jobs based on knowledge in start-up and operating companies. This requires continuous activation in order to transform new ideas emerging in the region into businesses.
StartupMill offers knowledge-based start-ups and operating companies help in refining their business ideas during the first challenging years. The services have been divided into three phases: evaluating the idea, start-up and refinement.
A new community-based StartupMill workshop opened for start-up companies in Technopolis, Skinnarila last autumn. By the end of the year there were 9 companies employing some 45 persons. These companies pay rent, but where necessary receive support from other experts and sparring from the StartupMill network. Wirma has an office on the premises.
